The primary function of this role is as a Software Developer to upgrade and maintain Columbia's research administration system (Rascal). Rascal is web-based application developed to simplify the University's research compliance and research administration processes. It is designed to help researchers and administrators manage ongoing research projects and related compliance activities here at Columbia. The Java Developer will work with the Rascal team to determine specifications, maintain, develop, modify and expand new and current web based Java programs. Common development tasks include, but are not limited to: • Implementation of new use cases using Java / Spring / Hibernate /Dojo • Generating reports using SQL • Debugging software defects Minimum Requirements: • A Bachelors Degree and/or equivalent experience, preferably in Computer Science, or equivalent experience in Java Development • 3+ years experience in Java 5+. Familiarity with basic design patterns (GOF), Collections, Transactions, as well as Threading. Preferred Requirements: • Must have full technical knowledge of systems analysis and programming and be able to organize and assume responsibility for assigned projects. • 2+ years experience with SQL. This includes common performance problems as well as the ability to utilize complex joins when creating reports. • 2+ years of experience with inversion of control containers such as Spring framework • 2+ years of experience with an Object Relational Mapping (ORM) frameworks such as Hibernate, Ibatis, OpenJPA • 1+ years of experience with JavaScript AJAX frameworks such as Dojo or Jquery. • 1+ years general knowledge of version control such as Subversion or Git. • 1+ years experience with build tools such as Maven or Gradle • Otherwise, a general desire to improve upon light weight Agile processes using continuous integration, unit tests, and Hudson. • Good communication skills, both written and verbal to address complex, technical issues to both technical and non-technical personnel. • Self-starter with excellent interpersonal skills. Individual will be required to talk to users and to develop functional requirements and provide user support via a helpline. • Good testing and deployment skills are a plus.
