Metallurgical/Materials Technician in Anderson, IN Remy has a need for a Metallurgical/Materials Technician in the Materials Analysis Lab Position Summary: Working under the guidance of the Sr. Metallurgical Engineer/Materials Analysis Lab Manager, performs metallurgical and laboratory testing in accordance with proper lab procedures. You will utilize optical microscopes, cut off saws, cross section mounting casting equipment, hardness testers, NDT and lab software among other items. You will also be involved in failure analysis of test samples and field returns and assisting in root cause determination in components consisting of steel, aluminum, copper, polymers and/or other materials. We are looking for a highly organized, “hands on” person with an attention to detail who will excel in this service oriented position. Performs various metallurgical and materials tests and analysis including: Gathering background information from the requestor(s) Logging sample into lab tracking systems Sample documentation, serialization tracking, etc. Prepare samples for analysis procedures Conduct various metallurgical analysis tests and procedures as directed. Collect and organize the test and analysis results Coordinate additional tests with other engineering groups/outside labs Write analysis reports Maintain lab equipment as needed Comply with all EH&S requirements   Responsibilities include (but not limited to): Perform standard metallurgical tests on product and compare results with company standards – both non-destructive and destructive techniques. Magnaflux/Zyglo and/or Xray analysis of ferrous and non-ferrous materials Cut/prepare samples using cut off saws and precision saws to desired areas of interest. Prepare metallography/material sample mounts. Grind & polish samples (steel, aluminum, copper, polymers and others). Mix and prepare chemicals as needed. Chemically etch metal samples for metallography and case depth evaluations. Macro hardness testing – Rockwell and Brinell Microhardness testing – Knoop and/or Vickers Case depth analysis (ECD and Total Case Depth) Convert results as necessary Photo document microstructures and compare results to applicable standards utilizing ref materials and other. Perform fracture analysis and documentation as necessary. Compile data using Microsoft Word/Excel and other lab programs. Write reports for manager approval. Archive material and data Maintain laboratory equipment Qualifications: High school diploma with 5 years experience in heat treating/metal forging/casting lab, metallurgical analysis, materials analysis, failure analysis or similar; or Associates Degree with 2 years experience in the above. Ability to read and interpret technical drawings as required Attention to detail is a must Ability to interpret materials specifications Ability to write routine but detailed reports Quickly handle “walk in” work as needed Must be able to multitask and handle ambiguous situations Must be able to interface with design engineers and management Self motivated and willing to work with little supervision Must follow 5S principles in the lab Desired qualifications: Associates degree in Materials Science Technology/Metallurgical Engineering or equivalent and 6 years experience. Prefer experience with: steel, aluminum and copper. Fracture and failure analysis a plus. Corrosion testing a plus. Mechanical testing of materials a plus.
